Ovum report: Nokia Siemens Networks leads the 40G market

Nokia Siemens Networks is the clear market leader in the WDM ((Wavelength Division Multiplexing) deployment of 40 Gigabit per second (40G), according to the new Ovum report “Global 40G/100G market update”*. With a market share of 35 percent, the company is a full 12 percentage points ahead of the nearest competitor.

Nokia Siemens Networks pioneered 40G in both research and implementation. The company started 40G research in the 1990’s and over the past decade has delivered an impressive list of trials which were all industry firsts. It also was the first vendor to undertake a mass roll-out of optical 40G technology as early as 2006. Ovum finds that Nokia Siemens Networks is now reaping the rewards for the early start in the technology.

“Success in optical networking is heavily tied to a company’s engineering expertise as well as depth of experience. At Nokia Siemens Networks we have both as for more than 25 years we have been developing and implementing optical transmission networks. This clearly pays off for our customers,” explains Uwe Fischer, head of Nokia Siemens Networks’ DWDM business line.

The market for optical communication in the 40G field will be ready for mass deployment in 2009, Ovum predicts, and expected to reach a total volume of 600 million Dollars. The analyst project that by 2013 this market is expected to almost triple.

Nokia Siemens Networks is in an excellent position to head the 40G deployment race long-term. The company has played a strategic role and been a key implementer in the largest commercial deployment of 40G lines/capacity.

“Making a solution appealing to carriers requires more than reliability and performance. The whole application cycle has to be considered and that means everything from usability to documentation and support has to be assured,” adds Uwe Fischer. “The current deployment of 40G gives us the experience to lay a solid foundation for the future of optical deployments.” The conclusion from Ovum seems to back this up: “Vendors who have been working on 40G will have an advantage over those that skipped (40G) and went right to 100G.”

  1. It's interesting that NSN is considered a "40G leader" when in fact they're just a 40G reseller. 100% of their 40G deployments to date are subsystems from StrataLight Communications that they reselling.
