China Unicom opens bidding for WCDMA equipment

China Unicom has opened bidding for equipment purchases in preparation for rolling out its WCDMA network, attracting eight equipment makers to participate: Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, Huawei Technologies, ZTE, New Postcom and Fiber Home Technologies, according to industry sources.

China Unicom plans to deploy WCDMA services in 282 cities during 2009 beginning in February. Among them, 55 cities will be completed in the first half. A total of 100 billion RMB (US$14.62 billion) will be invested to complete the whole deployment. China Unicom's capex budget for 2009 is expected to reach 60 billion RMB, the sources noted.

Equipment makers indicated that ZTE, Ericsson and Huawei have won tenders for most cities out of the 13 China Unicom has already confirmed. Final results of the first-stage bidding for 30 cities are expected to be announced before the Lunar New Year.
