ComNews Review: The development of third generation networks in Russia

The company ComNews Research produced its analytical review on the development of third generation networks in Russia. As utverzhdae ComNews Research, the launch of UMTS-network operators «big three» in 2008 became the catalyst for growth of 3G-traffic in Russia - in the IV quarter it grew by 62% compared with the previous quarter. Already in the first four months of the new networks have won the first Russian 3G-operator «Sky Link» (standard CDMA2000) for one-fifth of the market. The bulk of 3G-traffic in Russia is still generated in the networks of CDMA2000, but if the growth of UMTS-networks will continue at the same rate after six months in the area of mobile broadband access will dominate «Big Three».

The development of third generation networks in Russia resulted in a significant increase in 3G-traffic. It is estimated ComNews Research, in 2008 the volume of data transmission in the CDMA2000 and UMTS networks at 1636 TB that 3.4 times more compared to 2007.

The largest increase was observed in the IV quarter, when the 3G-traffic grew by 62% compared with the previous quarter and 3.1 times compared to the same period last year.

The main reason for the sharp spike - the opening of networks UMTS operators «big three» in the Russian regions. As a result, the IV quarter of UMTS-network generated 18% of all 3G-traffic.

Despite a much larger customer base and resources «federals», the bulk of 3G-traffic continues to be generated in the CDMA-network «Sky Link». This is facilitated by a number of factors: the relatively late launch of 3G-network operators of GSM, the broader geography of «Sky Link» in the regions to work in key regions such as Moscow. In addition, the bulk of the traffic data «Sky Link» generate modem connections, while in UMTS-networks - the Internet-surfing.
