Japan handset vendors eye expanding global sales

A number of Japan-based handset vendors have stepped up their contact with Taiwan OEM/ODM handset makers with an aim to expand sales by introducing more models for international markets, according to sources at Taiwan handset makers.

Sharp reportedly has re-entered the China handset market with models built using chipset solutions from MediaTek, indicated the sources.

In addition, Sharp also launched, on January 14, its 5-megapixel WX-T923 handset in the Taiwan market in cooperation with Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET). Sharp has been cooperating with FET since 2002.

At the same time, FET also introduced Fujitsu's F905i handset into the local market. Fujitsu plans to expand its handset sales to international markets, said Kazutomo Chiba, president of Fujitsu's handset business, Asia Pacific.

Following the recent consolidation of Sanyo Electric's handset business unit, Kyocera has stepped up its efforts to boost sales in the US, India and other markets, said the sources.

Kyocera is cooperating with Taiwan-based Qisda for the production of low-cost handsets targeting emerging markets, the sources added.

In addition, NEC reportedly plans to re-enter the global handset market soon, starting in Hong Kong, pointed out the sources.
