Motorola to launch touch-enabled A3100 and low-cost W165 handsets in 1Q

Motorola plans to launch its high-end Motosurf A3100 touch-screen handset as well as the low-cost W165 handset in the first quarter of this year, according to company and market sources.

The launch of A3100 and W165 will also highlight the vendor's growing reliance on Taiwan-based ODM handset makers, as the company is outsourcing the production of A3100 to Compal Communications and the W165 to Foxlink (Cheng Uei Precision Industry), said the market sources.

While unveiling the A3100 at the ongoing 2009 CES trade show, Motorola has chosen Taiwan as the first leg of the global launch of the Qualcomm-based 3.5G smartphone, according to Bill Chen, general manager of mobile device business at Motorola Taiwan. The A3100 will debut in Taiwan in mid-January.

Motorola will firstly cooperate with retail channel operators to promote the A3100 in the Taiwan market before teaming up with telecom service providers for joint marketing efforts, said the market sources, who also noted that the A3100 will carry a suggested retail price of below NT$16,000 (US$485).

The candy-bar form factor W165, being built with chipset solutions from Infenion Technologies and featuring an 1.44-inch CSTN display, targets emerging markets although the model will be also available in some mature markets, said the sources.
