Nokia WRT Plug-in for Aptana Studio
Nokia is investing in tools to make Web Runtime (WRT) development faster and easier, and is now offering a public beta of the Nokia WRT Plug-in for Aptana Studio.
Now, if someone knows how to develop web pages using standard web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript™, or Ajax, that person can quickly and easily build WRT widgets, too. No prior knowledge of the S60 platform is needed to create WRT widgets. The free Nokia WRT plug-in for Aptana Studio provides features that enable the creation, editing, testing, and deployment of S60 WRT widgets from within Aptana Studio, a popular open source web development environment.
The Nokia WRT plug-in is the first official tool to simplify the widget creation process for web developers, and more are in the works. This plug-in enables developers to use their favorite web authoring tool to develop useful and exciting WRT widgets that can maximize traffic to their website or web service from Nokia S60 devices.
“We are very excited about the availability of this public beta of the Nokia WRT Plug-in for Aptana Studio,” said Ung-Ping Tian, Web Technology Marketing Manager for Forum Nokia. “And we anticipate receiving a lot of useful feedback from the developer community to help us continue to improve the tool over time.”
Using the Nokia WRT plug-in for Aptana Studio, WRT widget code can be rapidly written using features such as full JavaScript code completion for the WRT 1.0 API. Once a widget has been coded, the plug-in provides features to preview, debug, package, and deploy the widget. The plug-in also includes the WRTKit library, which contains images and JavaScript code to enable the creation of visually appealing, functionally rich WRT widgets.
The plug-in can be used on either PC or Mac computers, and it can be used to create WRT widgets for a variety of S60 devices, including:
- Selected S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 devices (including: Nokia N82, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia E90, and Nokia E71).
- S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 or later devices.
- S60 5th Edition devices, including the ability to preview at nHD resolution.
"Our strategy for WRT tools lays the foundation for attracting a wide range of web designers and developers who can create rich internet applications for Nokia devices around the world. We will work with the integrated development environments that developers already know and love to eliminate the time and cost of ramp-up on tools which can be barriers to platform adoption,” said Michael Bierman, Senior Product Manager, WRT Tools at Nokia. “The WRT Tools team will support other key Nokia initiatives including the Common Web Runtime framework to benefit all Nokia platforms and services including S60, Series 40, and maemo, as well as supporting future distribution and monetization services."
