Taiwan 3G telecom carrier APBT saw annual profitability for first time in 2008

Asia Pacific Broadband Telecom (APBT), one of the five operators of 3G mobile communication services in Taiwan, has estimated its EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization) at NT$1.90 billion (US$58 million) and a net profit of NT$240 million, on revenues of NT$14.3 billion for 2008. 2008 will be the first year that the company records annual profitability since it began operating, according to the company.

APBT expects subscribers to increase from 1.83 million at the end of 2008 to 2.3 million by the end of 2009, the company indicated.

In 2008, APBT procured 500,000-600,000 CDMA 2000 3G handsets at a total cost of NT$2-3 billion, with Samsung Electronics (accounting for 29% of the volume), Nokia (23%) and LG Electronics (20%) being the top three suppliers, the company pointed out. In 2009, APBT plans to procure 600,000-700,000 3G handsets with a total cost estimated to be roughly the same as in 2008 due to decreased ASPs per handset, the company noted.

APBT currently has 25 self-operated retail outlets and 305 franchised retail outlets around Taiwan, and plans to expand the network to 27 and 336, respectively, in 2009, the company indicated.
