Bluetooth Adoption in Personal Media Players, Digital TVs, Set-Top Boxes and Other Devices Provides a Richer Entertainment Experience and a Connection to a Growing Base of Consumer Products
BARCELONA, Spain, -- 2009 MWC -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its combined Bluetooth(R) and FM radio single-chip solution is featured in the new award-winning YP-P3 MP3 player from Samsung Electronics. Equipped with the Broadcom(R) BCM2048 combo chip, the new P3 Media Player was a 'Best of Show' winner at the recent International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the music category and an honoree of that show's "Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Award." Broadcom's demonstrated leadership in Bluetooth combo chips and software makes it a natural partner for makers of innovative consumer electronics devices, where space and power consumption are critical and best-in-class technology is required.
Bluetooth is widely available in mobile handsets and hands-free wireless headsets, and is now featured in a variety of consumer electronics devices such as digital televisions, Blu-ray Disc(R) players and set-top boxes, expanding its ecosystem while shaping the user entertainment experience of these advanced devices. As multiple top-tier TV and Blu-ray player manufacturers bring new products to market that include Bluetooth, cutting-edge personal media players are also featuring Bluetooth in greater numbers. Bluetooth provides users with a richer, untethered entertainment experience and a growing base of products to connect with, enabling new features such as 'picture push' and remote control applications. Broadcom projects that the combined market for key consumer electronics devices incorporating Bluetooth will be as many as 454 million units in 2009.
"We see the award-winning P3 as part of the growing Bluetooth adoption trend and its expansion in the home now includes an ecosystem of new devices such as digital TVs, Blu-ray Disc players and set-top boxes," said Craig Ochikubo, Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom's Wireless Personal Area Networking line of business. "No other company can deliver a comprehensive portfolio of best-in-class software and advanced combo chip technology in support of these applications."
"As a leading innovator, Samsung continues to redefine the user experience by incorporating features like haptic feedback and wireless audio streaming in its products to provide the ultimate personal entertainment experience for our consumers," said Mr. Joo-Yong Lee, Principal Engineer of Samsung Electronics. "By continuing to adopt innovative technologies from partners like Broadcom, we are delivering on that commitment as seen with our new feature-rich P3 player."
Samsung P3 Portable Media Player
The P3 widescreen portable media player was introduced at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show and recognized for its evolutionary EmoTure(TM) interface with true haptic feedback and forward-thinking design. Even at just 0.39 inches thin, the P3 squeezes a 16:9 widescreen video player, studio-quality audio player, ultra-portable photo album, personal voice recorder, FM radio, and even a portable storage drive into one compact device. The P3 can also be paired with a Bluetooth-enabled phone, allowing the use of the built-in microphone to answer calls directly through the player.
Broadcom's Bluetooth Technology
The P3 features the BCM2048 Bluetooth combo chip, the industry's most complete, turnkey Bluetooth design platform for embedded and multimedia applications. The BCM2048 integrates Bluetooth and FM radio on a single chip and utilizes Broadcom's unique InConcert(R) collaborative co-existence technology that allows simultaneous operation of multiple radios in the same device, with minimal interference. Additionally, Broadcom offers the most complete Bluetooth software in the industry, maintaining end-to-end integration of its protocol stack, application profiles, and audio enhancement and processing algorithms.
Having shipped over one billion Bluetooth products, Broadcom offers the broadest family of Bluetooth silicon and software solutions for mobile phones, PCs, wireless headphones and headsets, peripherals, gaming and other applications. Broadcom's Bluetooth solutions are widely recognized in the industry as the most broadly deployed and feature-rich solutions. The world's largest manufacturers of consumer electronics, mobile phones and personal computer products rely on Broadcom Bluetooth technology to provide their customers with a unique, intuitive and rich user experience, increasingly free of wires and cables.
