More Xperia™ Panel examples – CNN, Skype, Mytopia and "On the Road"

At Mobile World Congress on February 16, 2009, Sony Ericsson showcased four new panels for the Xperia™ X1 mobile phone from CNN, Skype, Mytopia and an in-car panel called "On the Road". Below you'll find screenshots and an overview of each panel, and the winners of the Xperia Panels category in this year's Sony Ericsson Content Awards competition.

Since the X1's launch in Q4 2008, close to 420,000 panels have been downloaded onto X1 phones around the world, with half a million unique hits for X1 panels on the Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads service.

Available to download from mid-March 2009, the latest panels enhance the X1's unique user interface that enables users to customise the phone, bringing the content and applications they want onto their active desktop. These panels are downloadable from Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads website either side-loaded from a PC, direct from a web browser or direct from the X1's panel interface.

CNN
A new CNN panel keeps you constantly updated with the latest news, sport, or weather and a host of CNN content including access to CNN's popular citizen journalism tool, "i-Report". Browse information by category, personalise your experience or plug in your location and get instant updates for wherever you are in the world.

Skype
A unique Skype panel brings quick access to Skype on the X1, telling you at a glance which of your friends are online. Browse easily through your contacts and call or instant message them in just a couple of clicks, or customise your handset using the evening, daylight or event based effects.

Mytopia
For those who just want to have fun, a new Mytopia panel lets you play bingo and poker games with people around the world. With millions of users there is always someone online to play against or you can play by yourself. You can even collect virtual coins and improve your rank by winning live matches.

On the Road
For those always on the move, the specially developed "On the Road" panel includes large touch icons and a simple layout. Offering direct access to your music playlists and tracks, navigation tools and easy to use call-handling, this panel will makes your driving convenient and entertaining wherever the road takes you.

Sony Ericsson Content Awards 2008 Xperia Panels winner

On February 9, 2009, Sony Ericsson announced the winners of its annual content awards including the winning entry for the Xperia Panels category.

The winner was Spb Traveler by Spb Software - a mobile travel assistant application that provides travellers with world time and global weather forecasts, must-have travel tools such as flight search, currency converter, tip calculator, phrase book, a 3D globe, and even a geographical game for fun self education.

The judges commented that this application was "an ideal travel tool, well-packaged with a clearly defined user experience and friendly to use."

About Xperia Panels
Xperia Panels introduce a unique, more distinct way of interacting with content through the phone's UI, allowing end-users to personalize their desktop screen.

Xperia Panels can be Native or Web (HTML) and are lightweight applications that extend the Today Screen API in order to provide a full-screen, immersive experience giving a configurable, finger-tip navigation to access different options through panels displayed on the phone's desktop.
