New Wave of LiMo Foundation Members Accelerates Shift Towards Open, Inclusive Mobile Ecosystem
Leading mobile Linux organization gathers additional cross-industry support, expanding scope and depth of industry presence and knowledge
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, BARCELONA, February 16, 2009 — LiMo Foundation™, a global consortium of mobile industry leaders, today announced the addition of six new members, including new board member Telefónica SA, a leading telecommunications operator with global reach. Also joining the organization are Aromasoft Corporation, Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications, Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., Opera Software ASA, and Swisscom. This latest group of new members further validates the organization’s collaborative governance and development models, and underscores growing industry momentum towards a more open, inclusive ecosystem.
“The industry-wide paradigm shift towards greater openness that began with the launch of the LiMo Foundation continues to accelerate,” said Morgan Gillis, executive director of LiMo Foundation. “Each new member brings a broad base of practical experience from across the mobile value system; the arrival of these six companies confirms LiMo’s role as a primary catalyst for the ongoing liberalization of the mobile ecosystem.”
The introduction of these new members expands LiMo Foundation’s expertise, market, and geographic reach. The organization boasts a diverse roster of companies from both within and outside the mobile industry, including application, toolset, and technology developers, integrators, and ISVs. Sharing this additional cross-industry support and knowledge will enable LiMo Foundation members to react nimbly to changing industry conditions and market challenges.
“We are currently seeing a period of mobile OS convergence, combined with a rapid shift towards a more open mobile ecosystem,” said Kiyohito Nagata of NTT DOCOMO, chairperson of LiMo Foundation. “By leveraging the LiMo Foundation’s collaborative development model, which encourages knowledge-sharing and cost-mutualization, and the deployment of member-contributed LiMo Foundation OS technologies, our members and the mobile industry at large cannot only withstand, but thrive competitively in a challenging economic climate.”
LiMo Foundation was launched in January 2007 by mobile industry leaders to provide the mobile industry with an open, consistent mobile Linux-based handset OS, enabling the development of immersive, next-generation mobile consumer experiences. Currently, there are 33 LiMo-compliant commercially available handsets.
