Sony Ericsson evaluating TD-SCDMA handset production, says Ericsson CEO

Sony Ericsson is still evaluating the possibility of venturing into the production of TD-SCDMA handsets, according to Carl-Henric Svanberg, president and CEO of Ericsson. Svanberg also serves a director at Sony Ericsson.

Svanberg indicated that China-based T3G Technology, which already has mature TD-SCDMA solutions for handsets, is now an affiliate due to the recently completed merger between Ericsson Mobile Platforms and ST-NXP Wireless.

Song Ericsson, which has been focusing on mid- to high-end handsets and 3G models, will see strong potential in the China market now that China has released 3G licenses, Svanberg stated.

China Mobile has already held talks with Sony Ericsson for the possible purchase of TD-SCDMA handsets, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted Svanberg as indicating.

If Sony Ericsson decides to move into the production of TD-SCDMA handsets, it is likely to use TD-SCDMA solutions from T3G, commented sources at Taiwan handset makers.
