Taiwan Market: LGE aims to ship 900,000 handsets in 2009

LG Electronics plans to launch 25 new handsets in the Taiwan market in 2009 targeting to sell 900,000 handsets and capturing a 15% share in the local market, according to Finsen Chen, vice president of telecom business at LGE Taiwan.

In 2008, LGE Taiwan saw its handset shipments grow over 66% on year to 600,000 units in the Taiwan market and took up the fourth ranking with a market share of 9.6% by year-end compared to a mere 3.6% at the beginning of the year, Chen said.

Of the new handsets planned for 2009, 70% will be 3G/3.5G models and 20% CDMA models, indicated Chen, who also noted that LGE actually was ranked the number one vendor of CDMA handsets in the local market at the end of 2008.

LGE will challenge to take up the third ranking in the Taiwan handset market in 2009 and will also strive to maintain its lead in the CDMA segment, said Myong Won Baek, chairman of LGE Taiwan.

LGE shipped over 100 million handsets valued at US$14.2 billion in 2008, taking up, for the first time, the third ranking in the global handset market, Baek noted.
