Taiwan market: Samsung and Sony Ericsson both look to unseat Nokia as top handset vendor in 2009
Handset vendors Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson are introducing new product lines and both companies are confident they can wrestle the handset crown from Nokia in the local Taiwan market this year.
Samsung and Sony Ericsson are both displaying part of their new handset lineups for 2009 in Taiwan and concurrently at the going Mobile World Congress (MWC), according to the companies.
Samsung's new handsets include the Ultra Touch S8300 and the Beat music handsets as well as the company's first Symbian S60-based Omnia HD handset. All the new handsets come with an AMOLED touchscreen display, said company representatives.
Samsung aims to capture the number one ranking in the Taiwan handset market, focusing on four segments: fashion, touchscreen, music and smartphone, according to Smile Kim, president of Samsung Electronics Taiwan.
In the meantime, Sony Ericsson is showcasing new models from its Walkman and Cybershot lineups, including the W995, W395, W705, W508, C901, C903 and C510.
Sony Ericsson aims to regain the top vendor spot in the local market in terms of sales value from Nokia, who took the top ranking in December 2008 after Sony Ericsson had held the position for six months, said Steve Yeh, president of Sony Ericsson Taiwan.
