iPhone moving to OLED

A source at LG has revealed that Apple will be offering an OLED screen in the next iPhone

LG has agreed a deal to provide Apple with millions of OLED displays rumoured to be destined for the new iPhone.

If the rumours are true this means that the iPhone 2, or whatever Apple name it, will have a far superior display with increased vibrancy and depth of colour.

It's not all superficial though, OLED displays offer an energy saving when compared with traditional LCD options which means that the next handset should offer better battery life too.

OLED technology has hurdles to overcome but the deal between Apple and LG will lead to OLED R&D investments in the range of several billion dollars. Currently LG are working on a protective barrier for the displays to stop the attraction of “body oils and sweat”.

The source in Korea was revealed on Smarthouse.com.au and stated that the upcoming iPhone, iPod Touch and notebook ranges will ship with the new OLED displays.

Whether it's true for the immediate future remains to be seen, but if it is, expect to see a premium price tag hanging off the shiny new screen.
