Motorola and Vocera Announce Agreement to Deliver Communications for Better Patient Care
Agreement Extends Vocera Platform to Motorola Enterprise Devices and Wireless LAN Giving Healthcare Staff Options to Streamline Communications and Access Critical Information
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. and SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 30, 2009 — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Vocera Inc., today announced an agreement to jointly deliver solutions that combine the Vocera communications experience and a variety of Motorola enterprise handheld devices to deliver improved healthcare at the patient’s bedside. The agreement will enable healthcare staff to utilize the Vocera communications system on Motorola’s Enterprise Digital Assistants (EDA) and voice-over-wireless LAN (VoWLAN) smartphones to improve collaboration, increase patient safety and provide more attentive care.
“At Arkansas Children’s Hospital, our primary goal is to support patient care and safety through strategic use of technology,” said Lori McCauley, director of Telecommunications for Arkansas Children’s Hospital. “The integrated solution provided by Vocera and Motorola will enable us to leverage our existing technology investment to deliver clinical applications and instant voice access to a broader range of users.”
The first Vocera-enabled solutions will be a range of Motorola EDAs, including the MC70, MC75, and MC55. Vocera has developed a software client that will be sold as a software upgrade to run on the Windows Mobile handheld computers delivering instant VoWLAN communication capabilities.
The second solution will be the Vocera Smartphone, which will offer full phone functionality plus Vocera’s unique voice-enabled calling and messaging capabilities within the enterprise. Based on Motorola’s TEAM VoWLAN solution, Vocera will begin shipping the Vocera Smartphone in the third quarter of 2009.
The Vocera Smartphone will give mobile workers the instant communication benefits of the Vocera platform on a compact form factor. Designed to withstand everyday use in nearly any environment, the new semi-rugged phone will run the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, giving users access to a wide variety of applications, such as electronic medical records.
“Motorola is committed to delivering real-time voice and data to the point of care, helping hospital staff take advantage of the latest advancements in wireless communication to stay productive and focused on the job at hand,” said Vivian Funkhouser, principal, Global Healthcare Solutions Group, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “By extending the Vocera client onto Motorola’s voice-capable devices, medical staff can stay connected, quickly access electronic medical records, reduce the chance for medical errors and spend more time taking care of patients.”
The Motorola EDAs are already deployed in many of Vocera’s and Motorola’s shared customer sites. Motorola EDAs provide hospital staff with the information they need at the point of care and throughout the facility by combining a rugged mobile computer and imager or laser data capture technologies with multi-mode wireless networking for voice and data communications in one centrally managed device. Motorola has also joined the Vocera Interoperability Program to ensure proper operation of Vocera products on Motorola’s wireless LAN networks and has completed the first phase of testing.
By providing immediate voice communication among key resources, Vocera solves real business and communication problems in healthcare, such as the “call and wait” scenario that traditionally is used to find a resource. When Vocera is deployed, workflow is redesigned to enhance staff productivity and improve patient care and guest services. Hospitals that have implemented Vocera have experienced greater productivity — up to a five-time reduction in patient response time — and major reductions in patient wait time, response time to critical alarms, and patient transport time.
“The Vocera platform delivers instant communication of critical information at the right time, to the right person, anywhere in a facility,” said Brent Lang, president and COO of Vocera. “Through this agreement with Motorola, we are expanding the Vocera platform to a range of enterprise devices to meet the increasingly complex communication needs of the healthcare industry. With these choices — the wearable Vocera badge, the Vocera software client for the Motorola EDAs, and the new Vocera Smartphone — we are bringing the Vocera experience to new groups of in-building mobile workers.”
