Verizon Wireless Customers Are Covered During Tornado Season In Indiana
Company Completes Installation of Backup Generators at Cell Sites
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Verizon Wireless recently completed the installation of permanent backup generators at every cell site possible in Indiana, ensuring its customers can continue to communicate during power outages, tornados, flooding and other natural disasters.
The backup generators, which cost about $35,000 each, enable Verizon Wireless’ network to remain operational in times of emergency when power goes out. With the completion of this project, nearly 100 percent of the company’s cell sites across Indiana are equipped with permanent backup generators.
Verizon Wireless’ network team members will deploy portable generators in an emergency to the few cell sites that do not have permanent backup generators due to environmental or location reasons, so that these remain operational as well.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $50 billion since it was formed—$5.5 billion on average every year—to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. In 2008, the company invested more than $106.5 million in its Indiana network.
