Asia-Pacific handset market has recovered, says HTC executive

Judging from the strong orders and sales projections for the second quarter from telecom carriers in Asia-Pacific markets, the handset market in the region has already recovered, according to Jack Tong, vice president of Asia business at High Tech Computer (HTC).

Buoyed by Windows Mobile- and Android-powered models, HTC projects its Asia-Pacific revenues for the second quarter will improve significantly as compared to the first quarter, Tong stated.

Asia-Pacific markets currently contribute over 20% to HTC's total revenues, trailing Europe's 39% and North America's 36%, according to company sources.

The HTC Touch Diamond2 will be the growth driver for sales in Asia-Pacific markets in the second quarter, Tong indicated. HTC unveiled on April 9 the Touch Diamond2 in the Taiwan market with a suggested retail price of NT$21,900 (US$646). The Touch Diamond2 will be available in the local market at the end of this month.

HTC is also expected to launch the Android-powered HTC Magic in Taiwan in late April or early May in cooperation with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT). In addition, the HTC Touch Pro2 QWERTY handset will also be available in the second quarter, according to market sources.
