Global Mobile to purchase 100 WiMAX base stations from Nokia Siemens Networks

Taiwan WiMAX licensee Global Mobile will purchase 100 WiMAX base stations from Nokia Siemens Networks, with plans to roll out of its WiMAX network infrastructure in Hsinchu, northern Taiwan in May, according to company sources.

Global Mobile will pay NT$500 million (US$15 million) for the initial purchase of the WiMAX base stations, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted the company as indicating.

The company has already contacted a number of Taiwan-based network equipment and notebook vendors for the purchase of WiMAX CPE products, including WiMAX network cards and netbooks, the paper noted.

The company plans to kick off its commercial WiMAX operations in the third quarter of 2009, the paper added.
