Motorola MC17 Mobile Computer Recognized with Three Prestigious Product Design Awards

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., April 8, 2009 -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced it has been honored with three of the industry’s most prestigious industrial design awards for the MC17 mobile computer.

Continuing to demonstrate Motorola’s long history of innovation and the renowned expertise of its multiple design and engineering teams, Motorola’s MC17 has been recognized with awards from several leading design organizations. These prestigious awards include, the International Design Excellence award, iF Product Design award and Good Design award.

The MC17 mobile computer empowers shoppers to scan items, check prices, locate complementary items, access personalized promotions, and create gift and wish lists to deliver a new level of customer service excellence. Additionally, the multi-purpose device increases associate productivity by providing the tools needed to answer customer questions on the spot, streamline and error-proof inventory management and line bust to reduce wait times at check-out stands.

The MC17 mobile computer is Motorola’s third-generation retail solution that places advanced data capture and communication technology in an inviting, friendly form that is easy to use for everyday consumers. The product features a sleek, ergonomic form factor that can withstand everyday drops and tumbles in retail environments. Weighing 20 percent less than the previous generation device, the MC17 is optimized to reduce fatigue and provide comfortable one-handed operation for ease of use.

International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA)

Since 1980, the Industrial Designers Society of America has been honoring design excellence via the IDEA® (International Design Excellence Awards) awards. The program is the premier international competition honoring design excellence in products, ecodesign, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts. After reviewing more than1500 entries, the judges recognized Motorola’s MC17 with an IDEA Bronze award for a design vision that enabled the product to meet the current challenges of the market and grow market share.

iF Product Design Award

The iF product design award was introduced in 1953 and is conferred annually by the German-based iF International Forum Design. Attracting nearly 3,000 product entries worldwide, the iF product design award is one of the world’s oldest, best-known design competitions. The iF judges reviewed 2,808 products submitted from 39 countries and awarded 802 products in a total of 16 categories. Built to address the unique requirements of retailers looking to take the in-store shopping experience to the next level, the MC17 mobile computer was honored for its ease of use and innovative, ergonomic design.

Motorola also received an iF product design award for its APXTM 7000 portable multi-band two-way radio. The product was lauded for its innovative dual-sided design and compact, rugged form factor – purpose-built to address the unique requirements of government and public safety users.

GOOD DESIGN™ Award

Founded in Chicago in 1950, the world’s oldest and most coveted GOOD DESIGN™ award is conferred annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. A record number of submissions from the world’s leading FORTUNE 500 companies were reviewed in 2008, with the world’s most visionary corporations being recognized for innovative design. Motorola’s MC17 mobile computer was bestowed international recognition for advancing a new, visionary and innovative product concept, and for stretching the envelope beyond what is considered basic product and consumer design.
