Taiwan market: Tatung InfoComm launches WiMAX services in Penghu
Tatung InfoComm on April 27 officially inaugurated its WiMAX services in Penghu, a group of small islands west of Taiwan, making it Taiwan's first WiMAX operator.
The company installed a total of 21 WiMAX base stations covering 80% of the Penghu islands' land area, according to Tatung.
Monthly subscription rates are set at NT$699 (US$20.70) bundled with a USB dongle for mobile users and NT$649 for household clients connecting via an Ethernet access point (AP), said the company. Tatung outsources production of the USB dongles to Quanta Microsystems and Accton Technology, while APs are purchased from Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB).
The company also plans to offer WiMAX-enabled netbook and notebooks in the second half of this year, a proportion of which will be supplied by affiliate Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), according to Tatung chairperson Lin Kuo Wen-yen.
The firm will also kick off WiMAX services in the southern port city of Kaohsiung in early July to coincide with the World Games 2009 Kaohsiung which will take place from July 16-26, Lin Kuo indicated.
