Inklings of iPhone 3.0 firmware instability from developers

Recent testimonials from developers working with the upcoming 3.0 firmware update could point to a rocky release next month. iPhone developers are becoming more vocal about issues they’re experiencing with the update.

The problems range from crashes and freezing of handsets to fundamental issues pertaining to the design of new features. ngmoco’s Neil Young tweeted about needing to restore his iPhone after the firmware borked his handset. “3.0 is awesome - but something just broke my phone & I need to do a restore.”
Independent developer Chris Maddern shares in the difficulties, highlight several features that may not be as grand as expected. Cut and paste, for example, causes navigation issues when scrolling through text logs browsing the Internet using Safari.

Maddern writes on his blog, “The implimentation [sic] is excellent, except that it activates far too often. For example single clicking almost anywhere in the SMS text box will invoke the Select, Select All, Paste bar.”

Of the new Voice Notes feature that lets you record snippets of audio using the iPhone microphone, Maddern calls it “one of the slowest, and most horrid to use applications ever.”

Most worrisome are crashes of Safari during browsing and the phone freezing up during calls. “Safari now seems to randomly crash and close relatively often,” he says. The phone frequently freezes at the beginning of a call he remarks, “prompting it to appear that it wasn’t calling, but actually be ringing.”

To be fair, Apple is still running the 3.0 firmware in beta. There’s still a few weeks for optimisation and tweaking. Crashes of Safari and the like are sure to be addressed. That said, troubles after the first set of updates last year following the release of iPhone 3G weren’t unheard of. Hopeful, history doesn’t repeat in this case.
