Preparing for a secure mobile Internet experience

Nokia Siemens Networks to implement turnkey security solution to MTS’s mobile network.

Mobile TeleSystems OJSC (MTS), the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and CIS has signed an agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks on a turnkey security solution that will ensure safe Internet browsing to MTS’s mobile customers in GSM and 3G networks. The solution is expected to be in place by the second quarter of 2009.

The security solution delivered to MTS will include the filtering and screening of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and 3G traffic on the roaming interface, protecting MTS core network against security breaches and hacker attacks. Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks is the prime contractor and responsible for the consulting, design and systems integration of the solution.

“As subscribers increasingly use their mobile phones to download information and content from the Internet, it is our responsibility to provide them a secure browsing experience, protecting our core network against attacks originating from other networks with weaker security” , said Alexander Popovsky, Head of “MTS Russia”. “Nokia Siemens Networks was a natural choice for protecting our networks, based on our long term relationship and their proven expertise in security solutions.”

“Russia is at the beginning of mass-market 3G adoption allowing mobile access to multimedia through high speed mobile broadband connections. To prepare for this future where mobile networks may become increasingly subject to external attacks, a security solution is essential,” said Christian Huhn, Security Solution Consultant, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our technical capabilities and experience will enable MTS to ensure secure browsing for its customers.”

Consulting and security services are increasingly important to telecom operators today. Consultancy services help the operators to address their unique commercial, operational and technological situation, and guide them through a major business transformation. Nokia Siemens Networks is one of the leading companies in this market and has delivered more than 500 complex systems integration projects, led more than 170 consulting projects and signed more than 150 contracts for security solutions worldwide.
