Taiwan market: Vibo to increase handset and netbook purchases on growing subscriber base

Vibo Telecom, one of the five 3G service operators in Taiwan, plans to increase its planned purchasing of handsets and netbooks for 2009 due to steady expansion of its 3G subscriber base, according to company president Feng-hsiung Chang.

Total handsets purchased this year are likely to expand by 25% to 500,000 units compared to the 400,000 units originally projected, said Chang, noting that the company currently enjoys a net inflow of voice subscribers of over 5,000 a month.

Meanwhile, the company will double purchases of netbooks to be bundled with 3.5G data cards, to 100,000 units, given that the number of Vibo's 3.5G data card users is currently increasing at a rate of 6,000-7,000 a month, Chang explained.

Vibo is also in talks with potential partners for the joint launch of Android-powered handsets, with the plan likely to be realized by the end of the year, Chang added.
