ViewSonic may partner Taiwan or China OEM makers for 3G smartphones, sources say
ViewSonic is likely to partner with OEM handset makers in Taiwan or China for its thrust into the rapidly growing smartphone market, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
ViewSonic has long focused on marketing branded products as its core competitiveness, and so the company is likely to outsource production of smartphones to OEM partners, the sources commented after the display products vendor announced plans to tap into the 3G smartphone segment.
ViewSonic is expected to launch its 3G smartphones for the China market in the third quarter of this year and then roll out the devices for the US and Europe later, the sources projected.
The recent inauguration of CDMA and TD-SCDMA services in China offers domestic vendors and foreign newcomers a chance to enter the 3G smartphone segment, the sources commented.
The number of 3G users in China is expected to top 70 million in the next two years, estimated the sources.
