APBT expects to break even in 2009
Asia Pacific Broadband Telecom (APBT), the only one of Taiwan's five 3G mobile telecom carriers that adopts CDMA 2000 standard, expects to break even in 2009, company chairwoman Sophia Chiu said at a shareholders meeting on June 25.
The company already broke even in March 2009, she said. The number of APBT subscribers has increased from 1.81 million at the end of 2008 to 2.05 million at present, and is expected to keep rising to 2.3 million at the end of 2009, Chiu said.
APBT forecasts revenues of NT$17.0 billion (US$521 million) and EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization) of NT$3.7 billion for 2009, growing by 19% and 85% respectively from 2008, Chiu indicated.
As China Telecom, one of the top-three mobile telecom carriers in China adopting CDMA 2000, procures about 50 million handsets a year, APBT hopes to cooperate with it to jointly procure handsets at lower costs, Chiu noted.
APBT is lagging in CDMA 2000 infrastructure upgrade to 3.5G EVDO (evolution data only) standard due to lack of funds, but plans to raise additional capital for doing so this year, Chiu said.
