AT&T to Add Nearly 90 New Cell Sites in Arizona and Upgrade More Than 130 Sites to 3G
AT&T Continues to Expand Nation's Fastest 3G Wireless Network Across Arizona; Total State Investment From 2006-2008 More Than $375 Million.
AT&T* unveiled its planned Arizona network expansion for this year, anticipating to add nearly 90 new cell sites throughout the state and upgrading more than 130 cell sites to 3G. AT&T's expansion efforts come as more and more people's lives become increasingly mobile and fast-paced, and to address the growing demand for advanced wireless data products and services.
The expansion of its 3G wireless broadband network—the nation's fastest, according to recent data compiled by leading independent wireless research firms—is part of AT&T's ongoing effort to build the broadband networks that will create jobs and fuel economic growth, and enable its customers to access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.
"Private sector investment helps spur innovation and creativity," said Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. "Expanding access to technology can play an important part in creating greater economic opportunities for consumers and businesses that will drive Arizona to a more prosperous future."
From 2006 to 2008, AT&T's total capital investment in Arizona was more than $375 million. This includes 205 new cell sites and more than 521 site upgrades to 3G service in Arizona from 2006 to 2008. The network expansion serves the growing demand for advanced wireless data services like the iPhone 3G™.
"We continue to make significant investments to deliver dependable high speed wireless access in more places across Arizona for consumers and business customers who need to stay connected to work, family and friends," said Jerry Fuentes, president of AT&T Arizona-New Mexico. "Our ongoing investments will help us fulfill this vision while ensuring that our states have access to the advanced wireless broadband services that help drive economic growth."
The 2009 expansion effort builds upon the 17 new cell sites and 106 site upgrades to 3G that AT&T added in 2008 to expand network coverage in Phoenix, Sierra Vista, Tucson and Yuma and deploy 3G network launch in Flagstaff. AT&T's 3G network is now available in nearly 350 U.S. major metropolitan areas, including the majority of Arizona.
The super-charged network opens the door to a new era of advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content, such as AT&T Video ShareSM, a first-of-its-kind technology that allows users to share live video during a wireless call.
"Our commitment to continue the improvements to our wireless network is a top priority in 2009," said Chris Percy, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in Arizona and New Mexico. "We want our customers to have the best possible experience every time they make a call, send a text, or check an e-mail on their AT&T device and our commitment to the network has become even more important as people increasingly rely on AT&T mobile devices."
AT&T's wireless network is based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technologies, the most open and widely used wireless network platform in the world. As a result, only AT&T can offer 3G data roaming in more than 70 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 200 countries, in addition to AT&T's constant 3G expansion in the U.S. Nearly all devices in AT&T's current portfolio are "world phones" that can be used globally.
AT&T operates 37 AT&T-owned retail locations in Arizona. AT&T's products and services are also available at a number of other authorized dealers and national retail locations.
