DSC maker Altek to sell own-brand handsets in China market

Taiwan-based digital still camera (DSC) maker Altek has stepped into development and production of handsets and will debut own-brand handsets featuring 5-megapixel or more cameras and multimedia functions in the China market in July 2009, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Altek, which also makes optical lens kits and compact camera modules (CCMs) used in handsets, recruited an R&D team from Taiwan-based handset maker Arima Communications for its handset business in the third quarter of 2008, the sources said.

Altek has cooperated with China-based handset makers for a while and understands the China handset market, the sources indicated. Altek will offer EDGE handsets in the China market intially and then 3G models, the sources noted.

But some Taiwan-based handset makers hold a conservative view of Altek's new venture because the company has little experience in own-brand business, which involves the building of brand image, after-sales service network management, and cooperation with local telecom carriers.
