Taiwan industrial output continues to drop in May

Taiwan's industrial output slid 18.31% on year in May 2009, following an annual slip of 19.88% in the prior month, according to Taiwan's Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). Despite continued drops on year, the industrial production index (IPI) has posted sequential growth from February through May.

In line with the on-year IPI decline, the manufacturing sector decreased 18.55% on year in May. Manufacturing went down 20.35% in April 2009 compared to a year ago, data gathered by BOFT show.

Taiwan's export orders amounted to US$25.17 billion in May, down 20.14% over May 2008, according to BOFT. Orders for IT and telecom products slid 11.9% on year to US$5.89 billion in May.
