Symbian launches app service for developers

‘Horizon’ will test and standardise software to make available on app storefronts.

Symbian, the operating system on Nokia and Samsung smartphones, is launching an initiative to help app developers get into app stores.

The service, called Horizon, will work as a portal by testing and standardising software and making it available to application stores such as Nokia’s Ovi Store. The service will launch in October.

Nokia acquired Symbian last year, but it works as a separate entity from the company. The Horizon service has been welcomed by analysts, who said that it will help developers to submit apps, as well as pleasing manufacturers Nokia and Samsung.

CCS Insight director of devices and platforms, Geoff Blaber, said: ‘Symbian is positioning itself to allow manufacturers to use the platform. It is working as an instigator.’
