Taiwan market: NCC to ban sales of handsets not passed through compliance testing
Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) has said that it will take measures against the sale of handsets that have not been put through compliance testing by the commission. The ruling aims to ban the sale of gray market imports of popular handsets such as the iPhone and devices from Japan, as well as white-box handsets, according to market sources.
Branded handset vendors and channel operators welcomed the move, as gray market sales are growing rapidly. This not only represents unfair competition, but could also present a security risk and creates after-sales service problems.
However, some small-scale importers commented that the NCC's actions mainly to protect the interests of large-scale channel operators, and urged the NCC to lower its testing fees.
