T-Mobile announced that it has developed the world’s first test of multi-user broadband services with mobility on a Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) using LTE in the city of Innsbruck in West Austria.

The test network in Innsbruck is deployed in a real world environment using the conventional 3G grid as an infrastructure base. With the help of telecommunications equipment provider Huawei, the project is the largest European test network covering 60 radio cells running since the beginning of July 2009. “T-Mobile Austria is proud of having led a number of innovations in the Austrian mobile communications market," says Robert Chvátal, CEO of T-Mobile Austria. “We were the first to provide a nationwide HSDPA network as early as 2005 and we are once again leading the way with NGMN."

The focus of this test network is to gain customer experience insights as well as technology testing and verification. In particular, T-Mobile is focusing on aspects such as quality, stability and reliability in a variety of environments ranging from the inner city to highways in and around Innsbruck. "With this showcase we implemented a complete new generation of mobile network. Starting from remote radio heads to broadband fibre to all sites with lowest power consumption", states Jim Burke CTO of T-Mobile Austria. "These tests are paving the way to the customer experience of the future". Within the showcase new NGMN devices are used, that are capable of 50 MBit/s in down- and uplink with a variety of applications such as high speed file transfer and high quality video on demand.

T-Mobile is a founding partner and strong contributor to the LTE/SAE Trial Initiative (LSTI). “This trial demonstrates T-Mobile’s commitment to driving the mobile industry forward," comments GĂĽnther Ottendorfer, Technology Director Europe for Deutsche Telekom. "A trial on this scale will yield valuable information on the long term potential of this technology and help test exciting potential future applications for our customers."

"We are delighted to support T-Mobile on this showcase; the joint real field demonstration is a milestone for the mobile industry. As a leading vendor in LTE, Huawei will work together with T-Mobile and other LSTI members to mature LTE as a general purpose radio technology for all markets in the world", said Johann Behammer, CTO, Huawei Technologies Deutsche Telecom Business Unit.

T-Mobile has demonstrated its determination and leadership in NGMN across Europe. In September 2008, T-Mobile was the first company worldwide to successfully demonstrate NGMN capabilities under real life conditions. During a showcase in Bonn, Germany, T-Mobile was able to achieve data rates of up to 150 Mbit/s and during a showcase in Vienna, Austria earlier this year,

T-Mobile achieved a speed of over 130 Mbit/s over the air with four modems registered in a cell at the same time. “This trial is a necessary step to make our vision for mobile broadband for everyone a reality," continues GĂĽnther Ottendorfer, “We work diligently in each territory where T-Mobile is active to ensure that we are at the forefront of technological innovation, which in turn will let us bring our customers the foremost mobile broadband experience."
