HTC to focus on development of mid-range smartphones
Shipments of mid-range smartphones will account for 50-60% of HTC's (High Tech Computer) total handset shipments in the second half of 2009, according to CEO Peter Chou.
Chou made the remarks as HTC and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) jointly launched the Android-powered HTC Hero smartphone in the Taiwan market on August 11.
HTC will focus on the development of smartphones that will carry a price tag of around US$300, Chou said.
In the Taiwan market, CHT will offer the HTC Hero free to subscribers who sign up a two-year contract with a monthly rate of NT$1,749 (US$53). The Hero will also be available at a retail price of NT$20,900.
Chou also revealed that sales of HTC's second Android-powered smartphone, the HTC Magic, have surpassed one million units since the device was launched in late April 2009.
