AT&T Answers the Need for Speed in Blacksburg
Nation's Fastest 3G Network Delivers Broadband Wireless Access to Advanced Products, Services and Applications for "Hokies" Across the Region.
To address the growing demand for advanced wireless data products and services, AT&T* announced the launch of its third generation (3G) mobile broadband network to the Blacksburg area. Consumers and business users can now enjoy fast, reliable wireless coverage in downtown Blacksburg and on the campus of Virginia Tech.
This most recent network enhancement is one part of AT&T's ongoing initiatives to enhance the speed and performance of its 3G wireless network – the fastest 3G network in the nation according to independent testing – and complements the existing 3G footprint in Richmond and recent expansions in Charlottesville, and Hampton Roads.
Our ongoing investments in Virginia will help us ensure that our state has access to the advanced wireless broadband services that help drive economic growth," said J. Michael Schweder, President, AT&T Mid-Atlantic Region.
More smartphone customers have chosen AT&T over any other U.S. competitor, and AT&T is committed to driving continual enhancement of network capabilities to meet these customers' ever-growing mobile broadcast needs. The network upgrades are one part of AT&T's ongoing initiatives to enhance the speed and performance of its 3G wireless network. It is also part of AT&T's ongoing investment to build the broadband networks that will create jobs and fuel economic growth, and enable AT&T's customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them. AT&T plans to invest between $17 billion and $18 billion this year to enhance its wired and wireless networks.
"Demand for wireless bandwidth is growing, whether it's for sharing video and photos with friends, watching a movie, checking the latest Hokies scores, or listening to music on a phone, netbook or other mobile devices on the go," said Erika K. Thompson, vice president and general manager of AT&T in Virginia and West Virginia.
Recently, AT&T announced details to begin rollout of HSPA 7.2 technology in six cities by the end of this year. The upgrade is expected to provide a considerable speed boost to what is already the nation's fastest 3G mobile broadband network. All told, AT&T plans to deploy HSPA 7.2 in 25 of the nation's 30 largest markets by the end of 2010, and to reach about 90 percent of its existing 3G network footprint with HSPA 7.2 by the end of 2011.
Across the U.S., AT&T's 3G network is available in more than 350 major metropolitan areas.
