Chief Information Officers from Cities Worldwide are Gathering in Seoul

World Cities CIO Forum: 28-30 Sept. 2009.

SEOUL, South Korea, -- From 28 to 30 Sept. 2009, Seoul is hosting the World Cities CIO Forum, an international forum in which Chief Information Officers (CIO) from 42 cities in the world are gathering to discuss preliminary issues required for launching an inter-city organization for e-government collaboration, provisionally named the "World e-Governments Organization."

Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government with official support from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and UN Project Office on Governance (UNPOG), the representatives from different local governments, including Barcelona, Berlin, Guangzhou, Hanoi, Ichikawa, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, the State Government of Western Australia and Tunis, will attend the CIO Forum, taking place at the Hotel Shilla Seoul.

The World e-Governments Organization aims to serve as a cooperative body through which cities will be able to share their knowledge and experience on e-governance based on digital technology, collaborate by means of joint projects on e-government, and ultimately improve the life quality of citizenry by contributing to bridging the digital-divide in cities.

The ground of this establishment was initially laid by the adoption of the Seoul e-Government Declaration at the World e-Government Mayors Forum, also held in Seoul in 2008, while the upcoming CIO Forum will deal with issues involved in forming the prospective organization in 2010.

The CIO Forum will consist of a diversity of programmes, including CIOs Meetings, Workshops on the latest IT trends, and Exhibition showcasing cutting-edge IT products.

In particular, Dr. G. M. Reed, the former Director of the UN University Institute for Software Technology, and Mr. Jong-yong Yun, the executive advisor of Samsung Electronics, are going to deliver keynote speeches during the opening ceremony on the 29th under the topics of Building a concrete solidarity of e-governments to bridge the digital divide and The latest IT trends, respectively.

Once the World e-Governments Organization is inaugurated based on the outcome of the CIO Forum cities will be able to initiate their cooperation by working on finding/sharing/disseminating exemplary models of e-governance, conducting joint projects on narrowing the digital-divide, bringing IT-led innovation and greater transparency into public administration, as well as improving online public services.
