LCD Prices Stable for Handset Panel Vendors

Demand for holiday and consumer products helps with shipments.

Average Selling Prices (ASPs) for Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panels for mobile handsets in the third quarter are likely to hold steady thanks to a rise in demand in the second half of the year, according to iSuppli Corp.

Some pricing increases from panel makers in July will lead to prices on handsets to increase by 1 percent to 4 percent in the third quarter. But in the spot market and clone handset market these prices are set to increase up to 5 percent, depending on demand.

While pricing fluctuates within the mobile handset market depending on what corner of the segment you examine, one thing is certain: demand is returning for both panels and handsets as the clouds of the recession begin to clear.

Shipment Gains
Small- to medium-sized panel shipments grew in July and were expected to post further gains in August as a strong third-quarter 2009 has been expected for a number of months. In July alone, seven Taiwanese suppliers— AUO, CMO, CPT, TPO, HSD, Innolux and Giantplus—appear to have already achieved 46 percent of their third-quarter of 2008 shipment levels for panels. Shipments from most Taiwanese display suppliers were higher in July compared to the prior two months, with orders coming in from OEMs and channels for the holiday season as well.

iSuppli defines small/medium displays as those having a diagonal dimension of less than 10 inches.

Economic Crisis Impact
It’s beginning to appear that the economic crisis did not affect the small/medium display market as severely as iSuppli originally expected at the end of 2008. And beyond that, the economic recovery seems to be taking place at a faster rate in this sector than others.

Add to this the strong demand for medium-sized panels for low-cost netbook PCs, portable DVDs and Digital Photo Frames (DPFs) as well as the increased demand for Digital Still Cameras (DSCs) and mobile handsets for the holiday season, and shipments of small/medium sized panels should increase significantly in the third quarter.
