Motorola Ships One Millionth WiMAX CPE Device, Announces Brda at 4G World Keynote

Motorola solidifies position as a leading WiMAX vendor with growth in WiMAX device shipments, innovative network deployments, new devices, infrastructure and WiMAX Forum(R) certification of three more products.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., -- 4G WORLD 2009 - Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE :MOT) Home & Networks Mobility business announced that it has shipped its one millionth WiMAX customer premises equipment (CPE) device, more than doubling the total number of units it had shipped just six months ago. Bruce Brda, senior vice president and general manager of Wireless Networks, announced the milestone during his keynote speech at 4G World today in Chicago.

Motorola's diverse portfolio of WiMAX desktop CPEs and USB adaptors, including the recently announced USBw 200 and CPEi 725 and several devices that have won industry awards for innovation and design, has delivered the convenience, reliability and quality networking experience that users want. These WiMAX devices are enabling Motorola's WiMAX operator customers around the world to grow their businesses, and are connecting people to the Internet from remote, rural and urban areas.

"This growth in WiMAX CPE shipments is a significant milestone for us, but also is indicative of the momentum WiMAX has gained over the past year," Brda said. "We continue to see strong demand for WiMAX, especially in regions where many of the more than 75 percent of the world's population without Internet connections lives."

As Brda noted in his keynote, 4G wireless technologies like WiMAX are essential to unleashing the power of broadband to drive economic growth and help improve lives. "At Motorola, we believe broadband is the electricity of the 21(st) century," he said.

The WiMAX Forum(R) has projected that more than 800 million people will have access to next-generation WiMAX networks by 2010, representing an attractive opportunity for Motorola's WiMAX portfolio of devices and infrastructure. In addition to two new devices, Motorola also recently announced its WiMAX WAP 650 access point with 4x4 antenna technology.

Motorola has more than 30 WiMAX 802.16e contracts and deployments, including large-scale commercial systems. The business models for these networks vary greatly from emerging to developed markets and from fixed to mobile applications, but all meet the same basic need: providing easy and affordable access to high-speed broadband.

Motorola's WiMAX solutions are not only getting people connected, but they also are driving innovation. For example, a utility company in Australia is using Motorola's WiMAX solutions to enable machine-to-machine (M2M) communications for its smart grid programs, increasing energy efficiency.

At Northern Michigan University a Motorola WiMAX network is providing campus and community-wide wireless broadband. Motorola customer Clearwire now is offering service in 14 markets and projects it will have mobile WiMAX service in 80 US markets covering up to 120 million people by the end of 2010. And, in Mexico Axtel is using WiMAX to substitute for fixed line services for both voice and internet. They are offering broadband services at competitive speeds with VoIP services.

WiMAX Ecosystem and Device Security

A healthy WiMAX ecosystem of devices that interoperate on multiple vendors' networks will help drive adoption by consumers and the industry. Motorola recently launched a WiMAX Device Partnership Program that enables Motorola to help connect network operators and device manufacturers to the worldwide WiMAX ecosystem. The WiMAX Device Partnership Program is designed to accelerate time to market with consistent testing through Motorola's award winning interoperability test program (IOT) and further enable the WiMAX ecosystem with additional marketing and sales support through its reference program.

In addition, each and every device on a WiMAX network requires security through a unique key certificate. Manufacturers can obtain these keys from Motorola or opt to purchase a root key from Motorola's PKI Center which allows them to generate their own. Motorola's PKI Center was selected as a root certificate vendor for the WiMAX Forum earlier this year.

WiMAX Forum Certified(TM)

Motorola offers a portfolio of base stations and CPE products. Two of the CPE devices, the CPEi 150 and CPEi 750 are WiMAX Forum Certified as are five basestations and one chipset module. The newly introduced 4-watt WAP 400 in 3.5GHz, which improves capacity from the earlier 2-watt version, has recently received certification from the WiMAX Forum, as have the Motorola WAP 25450 (2.5GHz DAP Vx) and WAP 35800 (SAAP 3.5GHz).
