Opera unveils connected-TV concept: Live demo of Opera on Intel’s CE 3100 at IBC 2009
Opera Software announced that its Opera Devices SDK 10 now supports the Intel Media Processor CE 3100, the first system-on-a-chip (SoC) based on Intel architecture for Internet-connected consumer electronics. Opera will debut its browser for devices running on Intel’s CE 3100 during IBC 2009 in Amsterdam, September 11-15.
Opera’s support for the CE 3100 is a key milestone in the roll-out of “Opera for connected TVs” strategy. With a commitment to providing IPTV players with the ability to create and deploy value-added services easily, Opera enables a fast, non-intrusive and simple way of bringing the Web to the TV screen. In one push of a button or less, TV viewers can access and navigate Web content in tandem with their live programming.
“Our connected-TV strategy is simple: provide a quick and easy way for our customers to create unique and compelling Web content and services. To maintain this strategy, it is essential that we support Intel’s CE 3100. Intel recognizes the connected future of consumer electronics devices and the vital role the Web plays,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software.
Widgets are one of the key drivers of the “Opera for connected-TVs” strategy, as they provide simple, one-click access the Web. The Opera Widgets running on Intel’s CE 3100 were designed to be non-intrusive, and are fast and easy to command using the remote control. This “Widgets environment for TV” concept demo, now on display at IBC 2009, showcases how IPTV players can easily create and deploy value-generating services. TV viewers benefit by being able to access and manipulate popular and context-sensitive Web content without departing from live TV content.
