Taiwan handset makers eager to launch Snapdragon-based 1GHz smartphones
Acer and HTC (High Tech Computer) will launch their respective Qualcomm Snapdragon-based smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2009, pushing CPUs used in Taiwan's handset-manufacturing industry into the 1GHz segment, according to industry sources.
Acer is scheduled to launch its F1 Snapdragon-based smartphone, which will run on Windows Mobile 6.5, on October 6 to coincide with the launch the new mobile operating system from Microsoft, the sources indicated.
The F1 will feature a 3.8-inch touch panel, 5-megapixel camera and support Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth 2.1, said the sources, who also noted that the F1 will carry a lower-than-expected suggested retail price of about NT$18,000 (US$555).
HTC's Snapdragon-based smartphone, the Leo, will also run on Windows Mobile 6.5 and come with a 4.3-inch capacitive multi-touch panel and a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera that has multi-sensors for speeds, light and distance, the sources revealed.
In addition to Acer and HTC, other Taiwan-based handset makers, including Asustek Computer and Inventec Appliances, are also currently developing Snapdragon-based smartphones, with volume production mostly set in the first half of 2010, the sources added.
