Taiwan market: Netbook sales through carriers account for 50% of total retail sales in August 2009
Sales of netbooks bundled with 3G services in the Taiwan market reached 15,000 units in August, accounting for 50% of total retail sales, according to market sources. However, netbooks sold through carriers are expected to decline 20-30% in September as compared to August due to seasonal factors.
Taiwan Mobile sold around 5,500 netbooks in August, of which, Acer's Aspire One was the best seller, trailed by Asustek Computer's Eee PC.
Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) sold around 4,500 units in August, about 60% of which were BenQ's U102, followed by Acer's 10.1-inch and 8.9-inch netbooks.
However, sources noted that CHT expects its netbook sales to surpass those of Taiwan Mobile and reach 100,000 units in 2010.
Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) sold around 3,500 units in August with Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) 10.1-inch model enjoying the best sales, while Vibo Telecom sold around 1,500-2,000 units.
Taiwan's monthly netbook sales in October are unlikely to see any obvious growth due to seasonality, the sources noted.
