AT&T Customers Get More Mobile Broadband Coverage in Ten Indianapolis Area Communities

20 New Cell Sites Activated as Part of Ongoing AT&T Investment in Local Network.

As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T* today announced the activation of 20 new 3G cell sites that will bring 3G coverage to residents and businesses in more than ten communities in the Indianapolis area.

AT&T is creating economic opportunity in Indiana by expanding critical wireless access, providing Hoosiers faster and better options for everything from reaching emergency services to conducting business to sharing information with family and friends,” said Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman. “AT&T’s investments will also ensure that our state has access to the advanced wireless broadband services that help drive economic growth.”

Skillman joined state legislators and business leaders earlier this year as AT&T Indiana unveiled network expansion plans and investment throughout the state in 2009. Today’s announcement is part of AT&T’s ongoing investment following passage of the Telecom and Video Reform Act (HEA 1279) that was signed into law by Gov. Mitch Daniels in 2006. Between 2006 and 2008, AT&T's total capital investment has exceeded $1 billion across Indiana.

“Telecommunications providers are competing like never before in Indiana and that is very good news for Hoosier consumers,” said State Rep. Mike Murphy. “HEA 1279 has delivered expanded mobile broadband coverage areas and that mean expanded opportunities for economic development and staying connected.”

The 3G network has been expanded to ten Central Indiana communities including Monrovia, Alexandria, Baker’s Corner, Bud, Cicero, New Palestine, Rosston, Sheridan, Spring Lake and Strawtown.

Residents will also see enhanced coverage along major roadways in the Indianapolis area, including I-70 and St. Rd. 39 in Morgan County, Hwy 52 in Hancock County, St. Rd. 38 in Hamilton County, Hwy19 in Hamilton County, St. Rd 37 in Hamilton County and St. Rd. 9 in Madison County.

"This expansion of wireless coverage is great news for consumers and small business owners,” said State Rep. Scott Reske. “Fast and reliable wireless connectivity makes our communities more attractive places to live and allows us greater access to the power of the Internet.”

The new cell sites are one part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive innovation and extend its 3G wireless network – the fastest in the nation, according to independent testing. It is also part of AT&T’s ongoing investment to build the broadband networks that will fuel economic growth and create jobs, and enable its customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.

"The Telecom and Video Reform Act continues to make Indiana an attractive place for providers to invest in new technology," said George S. Fleetwood, president, AT&T Indiana. "We applaud all of the policymakers who supported these reforms. Their collective vision has helped create jobs, expand technology and deliver real benefits to Hoosier consumers."

The AT&T 3G network opens the door to a new era of advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich content. With 3G speeds, you can surf the Web, download files faster than ever, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.

“Our goal is pretty simple: we want you to have an extraordinary experience when you make a call, check e-mail, download a song or video, or surf the Internet on your AT&T device,” said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager of mobility and consumer markets for AT&T in Indiana. “As part of the Indianapolis community, we’re always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage and our investment in the local network is just one way to accomplish this."

AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T offers 3G data roaming in more than 100 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 215 countries.
