PC vendor reveals plans for Android portfolio as Liquid is launched
Acer is planning to launch around six new Android smartphones in the first half of 2010.

The news follows the launch last week of Acer’s first Android handset – the Liquid smartphone - which went on sale in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The PC vendor will ship five or six Android-based handsets in the first half of 2010, according to Roger Yuen, vice president of Acer's smart handheld business in Asia. As for Acer’s plans for the second half of 2010 Yuen said: ‘We're still evaluating the second half.’

The Acer Android portfolio will cover top, mid and low-end price levels and will include models aimed at business users as well as consumers, Yuen said.

Yuen declined to pinpoint when Acer's second Android mobile phone will be available.

Liquid’s launch signals Acer’s shift from Microsoft Mobile to Android based phones. Last year it produced ten handsets of which nine were on Windows Mobile.

Acer has already announced its plans to expand into mobile. It aims to be one of the top five handset manufacturers within five years.

Liquid sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen wiith a Qualcomm 8250 Snapdragon chipset inside, will be available in Europe by the first quarter,Yuen said. At present it is only available through operators in Asia.

"We have several operators we are talking to both in Asia and in Europe," he said. "We will be announcing [those deals] shortly, within the next month," he added.

Acer has also introduced a new Android application - Spinlets, a streaming music and video service. The app will allow users to listen to streaming music and watch videos free.
