Developers Can Now Submit Applications & Components to the Intel® Atom™ Developer Program, and Win Big!
At the Intel Developer Forum, Intel announced a new opportunity for developers to earn money by writing netbook applications via the Intel® Atom Developer Program community, and selling their applications through future application stores. Developers were told to look for a software development kit (SDK) to help them develop applications and components for netbooks.
Starting today, developers can now submit their applications and software components for validation into the program using the new beta version of the Intel Atom Developer Program Software Development Kit for both Microsoft* Windows (C and C++) and Moblin (C and C++). Additional runtimes and development languages will be supported in future releases of the SDK.
The features of the beta SDK include authorization, crash reporting, a consumer store client emulator for testing, license management and revenue management. Now that the beta SDK is available, developers can complete the required steps to submit their applications and developer components for validation to be sold through Intel OEM partner app stores starting in 2010. At the Intel Developer Forum, Asus and Acer announced their commitment to open Netbook app stores based on the Intel app store framework; and Dell announced their support of the program overall.
The SDK is made with the developer in mind. Carl Staaf of RobotSuperBrain.com tested his code with the alpha version of the SDK and had this feedback: “I downloaded the [alpha] SDK and I have to say, it's beautifully simple. There are only about half a dozen classes, and the Application class has maybe five methods. You can grok the whole thing in 15 minutes and you're off and running. Whoever put this thing together did us devs a big favor ;)”
NEW: Submit Early, Win Big!
Developers, who submit their applications and enter the Submit Early, Win Big challenge by December 21, 2009 will be eligible for new prizes! First and second place winners will receive either a two-person Smart Car* or a vacation package, both with a retail value of about $20,000USD. Three additional winning entries will receive a high-end electronics or gaming package valued at $10,000USD each. Details of the Submit Early, Win Big! contest can be found at http://appdeveloper.intel.com/challenge.
In addition, more prizes are available for applications and components submitted by February 2, 2010. The first 100 validated applications will receive a tricked-out netbook, and the talented developers with the most innovative application and elegant application design will win an all-expense-paid “rock star treatment” trip to GDC 2010! Check this page for more details.
Get your Questions Answered & Provide Input for Future SDK Releases:
With the alpha SDK launch in early November, Intel Atom Developer Program Community Manager, Ajay Mungara, started the SDK Developer Forum. It is moderated by the primary architects and developers of the SDK. This is the best place for developers to ask questions, and provide input directly to Intel engineers for future releases.
Types of Applications & Market Opportunity?
For ideas on types of applications to write, the Gartner Group* recently released a study on their research and prediction of the Top Mobile Apps for 2012. Sascha Pallenberg of NetbookNews.com completed this video interview on applications his readers would like to see for netbooks. Steve “Chippy” Paine of UMPC Portal and MIDMoves.com also offered his suggestions on types of apps to develop in this video interview.
