Sony Ericsson Hazel preview: First look

Gsmarena have posted a preview of the Sony Ericsson Hazel. Here are the phone's features and theif final impression.

* Dimensions: 102 x 49.5 x 16 mm, 120 g

Sony Ericsson must be quite serious about their GreenHeart lineup. The Elm and the Hazel look like the right phones to give it a fresh kickstart. Perhaps there will be more to follow - in the lower segments and with different eco-friendly twists. The point of the Hazel (and the Elm) though is to show that green handsets don't need to be functionally crippled niche devices.

The Hazel is far from a definite must-have but it boasts all-round skill and that's still a rarity in feature phones. If smartphones and touchscreen are not your thing this one is a logical option. The promised widget support and social networking will be another important asset.

The GreenHeart duo does well to diversify the supply. The differences between the Elm and the Hazel are mostly visual - different form factor and different displays. Whichever you choose you can count on solid all-round performance. We have to admit though we have a soft spot for the Elm - for its unusual shape and brilliant ergonomics. If you haven't done already, check out its preview, that we posted only recently.

Anyway, both GreenHeart devices seem to be worth your thought if you're shopping for an all-in-one feature phone. The rich equipment, ergonomic design and eco-friendly attitude are motivating enough. We only hope this time Sony Ericsson will think twice before they peg the price tag. Affordable touchscreen and smartphones may be a major threat, especially for the Hazel, which won't make it to the shops before the Q2 of next year.

Verizon Wireless Increases Wireless Broadband Capacity In Southern Tier In New York

•Additional capacity needed to meet growing demand for 3G wireless broadband
•Part of $100+ million network investment in Upstate New York in 2009
•Meet one of Upstate New York’s local Test Men, Jack Brandes

BINGHAMTON, NY — Verizon Wireless announced today it has increased wireless broadband capacity on its Southern Tier network. The additional capacity, added to four cell sites in Broome, Chemung and Steuben Counties, will help the company stay ahead of the growing demand for wireless Internet access as more of its customers switch to smartphones and adopt wireless data services including Mobile Broadband, the company’s high-speed wireless broadband network geared toward mobile professionals and business customers. This is in addition to the 3G capacity that was added to more than 20 local sites in June. Verizon Wireless launched its Mobile Broadband service in the Binghamton-Elmira-Corning area in December 2006.

“As wireless service evolves, more and more customers are discovering the benefits of wireless broadband connectivity,” said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “As more customers use our wireless data services, we need to increase our local network capacity to meet the growing demand and maintain our 3G network leadership.”

This network expansion is part of the company’s aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless’ voice and data services. The company has invested more than $50 billion nationwide since it was formed – $5.5 billion on average every year – and plans to invest more than $100 million in Upstate New York in 2009.

The company’s “nation’s most reliable wireless voice and 3G network” reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. These engineers drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles more than 1 million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets. Test vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless’ network and the networks of other carriers.

AT&T Investment Delivers Improved Wireless Network Experience in Wenatchee Area

Network Investments to Date Providing Area Customers with Enhanced Voice Calling Experience.

AT&T* released Wenatchee area network investment and expansion details that have contributed to customers benefiting from the nation’s fastest 3G network and an unsurpassed low local dropped call rate – one of the most common measures of wireless performance – according to drive test data collected by third-party independent wireless engineering firm Global Wireless Solutions (GWS).

“AT&T is committed to providing our customers with the very best possible network experience to complement our line-up of the most popular wireless devices that is unmatched in the industry,” said AT&T Pacific Northwest Vice President and General Manager Mike Maxwell. “Since 2007 through the third quarter of 2009 we have invested more than $4 million in the Wenatchee area network to advance our goal of providing customers with a wireless experience that is second to none.”

More than twice the number of smartphone customers have chosen AT&T over its nearest competitor. AT&T is investing billions of dollars in its wireless network companywide in 2009 alone. The Wenatchee area network enhancements include initiatives to improve speed, capacity and coverage.

Since 2008, AT&T network enhancements in Wenatchee include:

* Completion of the integration of all cell sites in the legacy Unicel network that AT&T acquired in Wenatchee.
* Optimization of cell sites through modification and equipment upgrades to increase the ability to handle faster data speeds and provide increased capacity.

“We applaud lawmakers in Washington who work hard to create a positive economic environment for investment and job creation. In these challenging economic times, we are investing in America,” said Dan Youmans, state president of external affairs for AT&T Washington.

In 2010, AT&T plans to roll out even faster 3G speeds in 25 of the top 30 markets with deployment of HSPA 7.2. This technology doubles the theoretical peak speed of today’s 3G network. As with all wireless connections, typical real-world speeds will be less than the theoretical maximum, and will vary based on a number of factors. AT&T is currently planning for field trials of next generation LTE wireless technology. LTE field trials will begin next year, with deployment beginning in 2011, which is when manufacturers expect a wide variety of compatible devices to be available.

As part of AT&T’s ongoing commitment to deliver the best possible wireless experience, AT&T recently announced the launch of AT&T Mark the Spot, an iPhone app that enables customers to quickly and easily provide feedback on AT&T network performance in a specific location. The new AT&T Mark the Spot app adds to AT&T’s existing network performance data to further fine-tune network investment planning and prioritization moving forward. The app, available now as a free download via the iTunes App Store, enables users to provide valuable feedback with as little as two button clicks.

The latest GWS data confirms a national dropped call rate of only 1.32 percent and that AT&T has the nation’s fastest 3G network.

Along with AT&T tracking to invest between $17 billion and $18 billion this year – billions of which is dedicated to its wireless network – these metrics demonstrate that AT&T’s investments are paying off for customers.

The In-Vehicle Digital Radio Landscape

Successful U.K. digital radio rollout may not work for all regions.

Faced with the expanding number of global formats, the automotive industry has not yet identified a clear winner for digital radio. To gain acceptance from the automotive industry, a digital radio format not only will need to be robust and suitable for mobile high-speed applications, but also must be backed by positive market signals from the entire digital-radio value chain.

As countries across the world struggle to establish viable digital terrestrial radio networks, some broadcast authorities may look at the relatively successful deployment of digital radio in the United Kingdom as a model. However, the factors that created a successful digital radio market in the United Kingdom are unlikely to be replicated anywhere else in the world for a number of reasons.

The U.K. government, in collaboration with the BBC, created an awareness campaign that commits the corporation to a digital future with the switch off of analog-TV broadcast by 2012. Further, BBC radio made a strategic decision to provide digital-only radio stations in an effort to entice users away from analog. These digital-only channels include music and premium sports events. Finally, there simply isn’t any competition for DAB in the U.K. from satellite radio.

Broadcasts using the DAB+ format substantially increase the quality of service available to broadcasters as the original DAB format is relatively inefficient and forces broadcasters to sacrifice audio quality in order to output more stations. Another advantage is that DAB+ is based on the Eureka 147 standard. Eureka 147 allows both DAB and DAB+ to coexist on a single multiplex with no degradation in quality of service and with no adverse effects on the current listener base.

Ibiquity Digital Corp. is the licensee of the HD radio format. The company spoke to iSuppli about its position in the market and the challenges it has faced getting the HD radio message across to consumers, device vendors and vehicle OEMs. The company acknowledged that the future success of HD radio would be heavily dependent on the broadcast format being adopted in the mass market in the automotive space.

Although HD radio was available to car buyers in 2007 and 2008, it was typically considered part of a list of options available to consumers during the purchase of a new vehicle. This option status required consumers to check-the-box in order to have the feature in their vehicle, which resulted in relatively low take rates. However, the substantial increase in the number of manufacturers offering HD radio as standard or as part of an infotainment upgrade package has changed the perception of HD radio in the market from a niche product to a much more mainstream feature.

Meanwhile, iSuppli believes that the merger of Sirius and XM has removed much of the uncertainty that was felt by system planners, particularly in the automotive sector, as they would be able to proceed with roll-out strategies that may have been put on hold pending the decisions of regulatory authorities. However, a bigger issue facing the unified satellite provider is sustaining consumer interest after the initial free introductory period.

Both U.S. satellite radio providers, Sirius and XM, have subscription-based services models ranging from $8 to $13 per month depending on the subscription period and services purchased. Each company offers between 80 and 90 music channels and in excess of 160 radio channels. Since the merger, much of this content has been integrated into combined programming where XM and Sirius broadcast similar content on similarly named channels. Only premium content, such as Oprah, Howard Stern and Martha Stewart, have maintained their separation, largely due to contractual reasons.

As the Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS) technology was designed to support data channels, both Sirius and XM have begun to broadcast value-added services supporting additional data and telematics platforms. These services involve capturing and sending data to the infotainment system ranging from stock-tickers and weather, to traffic flow and incident information, images, text and video. While Sirius XM’s entertainment content still vastly outweighs its data content in terms of subscriptions and revenue, the data services have seen significant expansion in the market.

ONDAS Media is a satellite based, pan-European digital radio company that is very similar to Sirius XM. In common with its U.S. cousin, ONDAS has proposed a full subscription-based service with up to 150 channels of music, sports, news and entertainment. Proposed data and telematics services include vehicle functionality, such as CRM, fleet data and diagnostics. Services also include driver information, such as gaming, sports and news, and enhanced data applications such as traffic and navigation. Digital satellite programming offered by Worldspace includes a combination of news, sports, music, brand name content and education programming developed internally or provided through sources such as BBC and CNN International. However, Worldspace is currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

For now, the company plans to continue operations to support its 170,000 subscribers in 10 countries across Europe, Asia and Africa. According to press reports, U.S. media and communication group Liberty Media could be interested in taking an active share in Worldspace. In 2009, Liberty Media stepped in to help Sirius XM avoid bankruptcy.

The agreement by broadcasters to adopt AM and FM as the two principal analog broadcast formats for radio almost certainly accounted for the huge success of these technologies worldwide. In stark contrast, digital radio is attempting to launch several incompatible formats, with little or no cross-border acceptance.

The ability to adhere to standards means less market fragmentation. However, confusion in the market and lack of any significant momentum towards one—or even two—standards, has led to significant delays as manufacturers wait for a shake-out in the market.

In the case of DAB radio, what concerns manufacturers most is that the hardware that is being installed in cars today is not future-proof, as it was probably specified at a time before the issues of audio quality and bandwidth inefficiency surfaced on mainland Europe. In contrast, receivers specified today can take advantage of the latest technologies making them backward compatible. However, from a vehicle manufacturer’s point of view, picking the right time to jump-in and support a new technology while the specification is still not finalized could be extremely risky.

ZTE and Huawei Claim Lions Share of China Mobile’s PTN Purchasing

The two companies each win 35 percent of first stage of technology rollout.

Telecommunications gear makers ZTE and Huawei were the big winners in China Mobile’s massive equipment purchases for the build out of its first Package Transport Network (PTN), with each company garnering a 35 percent share of the revenue, according to iSuppli Corp.

PTN is a connection-oriented transport network technology. Based on Internet Protocol (IP), PTN is applicable to a multi-service environment and capable of accessing, converging and transporting “Time Division Multiplex (TDM) over package” services.

After China’s telecom restructuring in 2008, the nations three carriers were granted rights to provide full-range services and 3G in China. However, there are bottlenecks in the transmission of data from the base station to the IP networks. To resolve the pressures from 3G mobile broadband traffic growth, carriers plan to build IP-oriented transport networks.

China Mobile was the first to make the effort to invest in PTN, announcing unified bidding in December 2009. The winners in the first order of the bidding process were ZTE, Huawei, FiberHome, Shanghai Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson.

The specific amount of PTN equipment included in the deal was not announced. However, the first purchase is estimated at no less than 50,000 pieces of equipment. Huawei and ZTE each garnered about 35 percent of the orders from the deal.

FiberHome, a domestic optical equipment vendor, ranked third with a 15 percent market share. The company also produces PTN equipment for Ericsson, which won 5 percent of the deal.

Shanghai Bell Alcatel, the joint-venture of Alcatel-Lucent and Shanghai Bell, grabbed 10 percent market share and ranked fourth in this bidding. The other bidders are Nokia-Siemens and New Postcom from Guangdong Province.

After the restructuring in 2008, China Telecom purchased China Unicom’s CDMA network. China Unicom merged with China Netcom to form the new China Unicom. After the restructuring, both China Telecom and China Unicom must deal with the network integration of fixed networks and mobile networks.

In contrast, China Mobile has a relatively simple network architecture. The goal of improving the base station network and data transport capability is clear. That’s why China Mobile is leading the PTN purchasing among the three carriers.

In order to offset the lack of TD-SCDMA terminals, China Mobile planned to increase the number of such terminals in addition to handsets. By customizing mobile network terminals, including USB Modems, netbooks, e-readers, mobile home gateways, video surveillance terminals, China Mobile is promoting TD-SCDMA from mobile phones to wide-ranging terminals. The promotion of multiple TD-SCDMA terminals is no doubt intended to raise mobile broadband demand in 2010.

iSuppli believe the first PTN bidding represents just a test for Chinas carriers. With 3G applications and services widely promoted in the future, China Telecom and China Unicom are expected to launch their PTN bidding in 2010.

Bluetrek Crescendo Voice. Bluetooth Headset Review

Mobile-review have posted a review of the Bluetrek Crescendo Voice. Bluetooth Headset. Here is their final impression.

Bluetrek Crescendo Voice is one of the more advanced headsets on the market. It is not cheap, but it is easy to use, provides excellent functionality with voice activated features, easy to follow setup and high quality noise suppression/DSP. It is comfortable to wear and light. The design is nothing to write home about, but it is a good, if average, looking device. The standby and talk times are average on today's market and will not disappoint. Finally, the range is very good. Some smaller deficiencies and one larger flaw (Multipoint) exist, but there is nothing perfect in this world.

The Sony Ericsson Elm isn't a revolutionary device but it sure has a front spot in the company's feature phone lineup. It's arguable whether GreenHeart will be as compelling as Cybershot or Walkman, but the Elm is certainly not limited to an eco-friendly niche. Right the opposite, together with the Hazel, it ventures to take charge of the Sony Ericsson midrange at a moment when the company is radically reshaping its portfolio.

With top-notch connectivity, good 5 megapixel imaging, the green commitment and new approach to social networking, the Elm has a strong enough identity that goes well beyond GreenHeart. A small, lightweight and feature-rich phone, with a distinct design, sounds like a good recipe for success.

We had such a nice time with it we may be tempted to overstate its sales potential. It may be too much and too early to call it a bestseller but it's all cheers on Elm street at present.
