Compal Communications expects over 50% revenues share for smartphones, says chairman

Compal Communications expects smartphones to account for over 50% of its total revenues in 2010, up significantly from 20% in 2009, according to company chairman Ray Chen.

The company disclosed that it shipped a total of 16.02 million handsets in 2009, but declined to reveal its shipment projection for 2010 amid market uncertainties, including the impact of the launch of Google's own-brand smartphones on the market.

As Compal Communications is currently the contract smartphone maker for Palm, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard (HP), LG Electronics (LGE) and Acer, the company is expected to see its revenues grow 50% to over NT$37 billion (US$1.16 billion) in 2010, according to an estimate of industry sources.
