Gemtek and Quanta Microsystems see WiMAX CPE shipments peak in 4Q09
Taiwan-based network equipment makers Gemtek Technology and Quanta Microsystems have seen their shipments of WiMAX CPE products increase substantially in 2009 as compared to a year earlier, according to industry sources.
Shipments of built-in WiMAX modules by Gemtek hit a peak in the fourth quarter of 2009, totaling 250,000 units and accounting for 45% of its yearly shipments, the sources noted.
Quanta Microsystems began to ship WiMAX network cards at a rate of 10,000-20,000 units a month in the first quarter of 2009 and managed to ramp up its monthly shipments to 70,000-80,000 units in the fourth quarter, said the sources.
Quanta Microsystems' total shipments of WiMAX network cards are likely to reach 500,000-600,000 units in 2009, the sources estimated.
Shipments of WiMAX CPE products by Taiwan makers are expected to remain strong in the first quarter of 2010 due to continued roll-outs of WiMAX infrastructure by carriers in India, Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia, the sources commented.
