Nokia N900 and the Maemo platform attract developers – Downloads now available in Ovi Store Beta

The Nokia N900 and Linux-based Maemo software platform attract a growing number of developers and brands signing on to create innovative applications that enrich the device experience. Fusing PC power, the internet, and the mobile phone together with an intuitive user interface, Maemo and the Nokia N900 prove an attractive avenue for creative collaboration and distribution. The applications allow users to customize and personalize the device further to meet their needs.

Some highlights:
The Associated Press announced that AP Mobile, the award-winning multimedia news portal that provides anytime access to international, national and local news, is available for Maemo and the Nokia N900. The AP Mobile application is a live widget that lives on the Maemo desktop and automatically updates with recent news items from various areas of the world. Additionally, users can choose if they want to receive news from a variety of categories such as “Top News,” “Technology” or “Wacky.”

Qik, the leading live mobile video streaming platform, expands their relationship with Nokia in developing a Qik application optimized for the Nokia N900 and Maemo software. Utilizing a new user interface, streaming live video from a mobile device is made easy with on-screen features including adding a title or adjusting the privacy settings. With a high speed data connectivity over 3G or WiFi, a 5MP camera, dual LED flash and Carl Zeiss Optics, taking videos and streaming them with Qik has never been simpler than with the N900.

Pixelpipe, a content distribution gateway that allows users to publish text, photo, video and audio files once, and have the content distributed across over 110 social networks, photo/video sites and blogs, developed a plugin that works directly with the Nokia Share Online client found on the Nokia N900. This plugin allows users an easy way to upload images over the air to their favorite social networks and online content sites. Pixelpipe integrates directly with the Nokia N900’s camera and gallery, background uploads and tag cloud.

Brands and developers of all sizes have begun developing for Maemo and plan to distribute through Ovi Store, Nokia’s one-stop shop for mobile media content. And with the new Nokia N900 software update (1.2009.44-1) issued yesterday, device owners now have direct access to the beta release of Ovi Store on Maemo. The beta release of Ovi Store for the Nokia N900 amplifies personalization on the device through the purchase and download of a range of applications, video, games, and more. A blinking icon on the status area notifies current Nokia N900 owners of the software update, which downloads over the internet without the use of cables and the need to be tied to a PC.
