Channel Island subscribers ride the mobile broadband wave
Nokia Siemens Networks deploys Cable & Wireless Communications’ 3G network in the Channel Islands.
Mobile broadband is now a reality across the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey for customers of Sure, the local brand of Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC). After previously enabling 3G service for Jersey subscribers, Nokia Siemens Networks has recently expanded Sure’s 3G network to include Guernsey, giving islanders access to enhanced multimedia data services.
“The explosion of smart phones, advanced multimedia applications and high-speed Internet access is creating new demands on our network,” said Russ Sharman, chief technical officer at Sure. “We are committed to meeting those demands in order to offer our customers the best service using the best 3G technology. That’s what we’re relying on Nokia Siemens Networks to provide for our Channel Islands customers and visitors who roam onto our network.”
“We have been enabling 3G services in Jersey since 2006,” said Andy Tempest, head of the Cable & Wireless Communications customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “We have been able to build upon that experience to support CWC as it expands its high-speed data service offering to Guernsey as well.”
Nokia Siemens Networks is deploying its Single Radio Access Network (Single RAN) platform, which serves a variety of wireless access technologies by using the same Flexi Multiradio base station. Single RAN removes the need to deploy separate equipment for 2G, 3G and LTE networks, providing operators with a cost-efficient and future-proof approach to building their radio networks. The award-winning Flexi Multiradio base station also brings further efficiencies by using a common management system and by allowing operators to deploy new functionality across the network via a simple software upgrade.
As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks also assumes responsibility for capacity and radio planning to ensure an efficient implementation of the network.
