[SID 2010] SMD Keynote_SMD plans for AMOLED

In the Keynote speech of SID 2010, Sang Soo Kim, Vice President of SMD presented the benefits of AMOLED as the future display and SMD's AMOLED business plan together.

SMD is aiming to improve the efficiency from current 20cd/A to 40cd/A in the near future, the lifetime from 50,000 hours to 100,000 hours, and power consumption levels from 62W to less than 30W respectively. He added that SMD will apply advanced color pattern method in the manufacturing process for overcoming the large size limitation of current FMM method and also thin film method instead current glass base encapsulation method and in the future, they will apply Oxide substrate for developing and mass-production. Followings are more information.

As already known, SMD already invested approximately $2.2B to order 5.5 generation equipments and the set-up will be started by the end of 2010 for mass-production in 2011. By the year of 2012, the production capacity will be increased up to 70k glass/M in the plan.

By increasing of substrates' size from existing 4 generation to 5.5. generation, the number of same size panels produced from one substrate are also increasing and it brings more production efficiency. The table below shows the number of producing panels for each size in 4 and 5.5 generations.

SMD showed their anticipation and confidence for the AMOLED business saying that in 2015, Mobile AMOLED panel production will be increased rapidly and also AMOLED would be the mainstream in the premium TV market.
