Ericsson Receives Top Honors at AfricaCom Awards
Ericsson honored with Rural Telecoms Award by Africa’s most prestigious telecommunications industry platform.
AfricaCom Awards are held annually to recognize leading players in technology advancements and achievements throughout the African continent
AfricaCom Awards, the continent’s most prestigious and rewarding platform for recognizing excellence in the African telecommunications sector, presented Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) with the ‘Rural Telecoms Award’ at its 2011 gala ceremony.
Lars Lindén, Head and President of Ericsson sub-Saharan Africa, accepted the award at the gala dinner in Cape Town, South Africa on November 9, 2011.
“As the world-leading provider of telecommunications equipment and related services, we at Ericsson are in a unique position to harness the transformational potential of technology in our world, using it to improve the way people live and how businesses operate, strengthening the communities we operate in,” said Lindén.
“The Rural Telecoms Award speaks to the heart of our vision for the Networked Society, and our program Technology for Good, which demonstrates how connections and applications that are properly designed make lives and businesses better and more efficient.”
The ‘Rural Telecoms Award’ recognizes an outstanding vendor solution, or service provider initiative that has extended and improved telecommunications services in rural and under-served Africa since November 2010. Ericsson received this award for the ongoing work in Tanzania supporting Rural Netco Ltd.
Through Rural Netco Ltd, Ericsson and has implemented a high speed shared broadband network to provide affordable end-to-end services to underserved people in rural Tanzania. This is the first wholesale company set-up to cater for rural areas and is able to serve any and all operators through one multi-standard network, resulting in a high quality experience for end-users.
The company’s services are based on the GSM association’s 3G UMTS 900, 3GPP standard and supply already deployed infrastructure site sharing with operators which delivers both excellent performance and economics that gives much wider coverage, with less environmental impact and more affordable ICT services to end users.
The AfricaCom Awards are held annually to recognize leading players in technology advancements and achievements throughout the African continent. The awards consisted of eleven different categories and were open to companies from every part of the industry including; operators, service providers, vendors, and authorities/regulators.
