Motorola Mobility Launches Flexible Multichannel Transcoder in North America, Simplifies Operations and Boosts Network Bandwidth

Video service providers can now more efficiently deliver a broad range of high-quality video services to consumers across North America, thanks to the new Motorola ST-6000 series transcoder from Motorola Mobility, Inc. The ST-6000 series high performance multi-channel video processing platform supports MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standard and high definition transcoding for satellite, cable, and IPTV applications. Designed to reduce overall capital and associated costs, the ST-6000 also supports evolving network needs and headend requirements such as independent per channel audio transcoding and picture-in-picture (PIP) capability. Launched at IBC 2011, this is the first time the ST-6000 series is available in North America.

The ST-6000 delivers the highest quality video per channel plus significant bandwidth savings in three, six or twelve channel configurations resulting in significant capital and operational savings and a highly simplified deployment model. The consolidation of up to 12 channels of MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 onto a single 1RU platform provides up to 80 percent reduction in power consumption and up to 90 percent savings in overall headend space requirements compared to single channel transcoding solutions. Service providers also benefit from the flexibility and investment protection as the ST-6000 offers a migration path from standard definition (SD) to high-definition (HD) video via software licensing, thereby avoiding costly hardware replacements.

Key features of the ST-6000 include:

Decodes both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 to support the ingestion of both broadcast standards
Encodes both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding to support delivery to both legacy and advanced consumers’ set-top boxes
Transcodes audio signals independently of video, resulting in bandwidth savings of up to 352kbps per video channel
Offers audio transcoding to Dolby Pulse or HE-AAC, resulting in a potential reduction of audio bit rates by as much as 50 percent
Delivers up to 12 low resolution proxy “thumbnail” channels, which can be used for Picture-in-Picture applications
When combined, these features help service providers maximize bandwidth to do more with their existing networks and offer consumers higher-quality video service.
